Tab Limiter

Keep your browser focused. Automatically close excess tabs so you never lose track of what matters.

What It Does

Tab Limiter enforces a maximum number of open tabs in your browser. When you open a new tab that would push you over your chosen limit, the extension silently closes the least recently used eligible tab — no interruption, no prompts.

Set your limit once. Browse without the clutter.

Features

  • Configurable limit — set any value from 1 to 100 tabs (default: 10)
  • Smart tab selection — only closes tabs you haven't used recently
  • Respects pinned tabs — pinned tabs are never automatically closed
  • Respects tab groups — grouped tabs are never automatically closed
  • Syncs across devices — your limit follows you wherever you're signed in to your browser profile
  • Lightweight — no background polling, no memory overhead, no network requests

How to Use

  1. Click the Tab Limiter icon in your toolbar
  2. Enter your desired tab limit (1–100)
  3. Click Save

That's it. Open tabs as you normally would — Tab Limiter handles the rest.

How It Works

Every time you open a new tab, Tab Limiter checks your current tab count. If you're over the limit, it picks the eligible tab you used least recently and closes it automatically. Pinned tabs and grouped tabs are always preserved.

Privacy

Tab Limiter collects no personal data. The only thing it stores is your chosen tab limit — a single number. No URLs, no browsing history, no identifiers are ever read, recorded, or transmitted. The extension makes no network requests of any kind.

Permissions

Tab Limiter requests only two permissions:

Permission Why it's needed
tabs To read tab count, last-accessed time, pinned status, and group membership
storage To save your configured tab limit

No other permissions are requested or used.
